Abandoned Olympic Villages: What these once glorious venues look like now

Now that the 2016 Olympics are over, the crowds and athletes have gone home (some in sorrow and some with pride and medals in their luggage) we thought it fitting to take a look back at past Olympic cities, and see what happens after all of the hoopla is over.

A host city’s worst-case scenario is that the venues will go unused after the games, and become a detriment and an eyesore to the region. You can see this all around the world at old Olympic sites.

An economic surge happens surrounding the Olympics, but even that costs money. After that surge subsides, then what?

The causes for this ghost town effect are specific to each country; war, economic distress, and natural disasters.
